A-share market closes the first half of the year: trading volume breaks the record, semiconductor sector market value surpasses state-owned banks.
In the first half of 2026, the A-share market closed with most major indexes rising. The Shanghai Composite Index rose by 3.16% and the Shenzhen Component Index rose by 19.82%. The ChiNext Index and the Star Market 50 Index performed the best, both reaching historical highs with gains of 35.58% and 64.25% respectively in the first half of the year. The total market value of A-shares has also risen to 118.95 trillion yuan, an increase of 9.41% from the end of last year. Market trading activity has also reached a new high, with total market turnover exceeding 31.7 trillion yuan in the first half of the year, setting a new record for a half year. In a historic development, the market value of the semiconductor sector in A-shares has surpassed that of state-owned banks, ranking first in the Shenwan Index of secondary industries. At the same time, the number of companies with a market value of over one trillion yuan has increased significantly to 206, with technology companies leading the way in this expansion.
