The Hong Kong SAR Government today published the relevant railway proposals for the Hong Kong section of the Northern Link Branch Line in the Gazette in accordance with the Railway Ordinance. The SAR Government earlier signed the first part of the project agreement with the MTR Corporation Limited for the Northern Link Project, starting the more mature and urgent works in the main line project, and also requesting the MTR Corporation to simultaneously conduct detailed planning and design for the Northern Link Branch Line. The Northern Link Branch Line includes an underground railway approximately six kilometers long starting from the main line at Sin Tin Station, with the Hong Kong section approximately five kilometers long and the Shenzhen section approximately one kilometer long. The Northern Link Branch Line will include three new railway stations, including two new railway stations in the Hong Kong section located in Sin Tin Science Park and Riverfront area, and a new railway station in the Shenzhen section located at the New Huanggang Port. A spokesperson for the SAR Government stated that the Northern Link Project is an important transportation infrastructure to promote the development of the Northern Metropolis Area and help Hong Kong better integrate into national development, in line with the National "Fifteen-Year Plan" to accelerate the construction of the Northern Metropolis Area and promote the coordinated development of rail transit. The Northern Link main line will become the backbone of public transport for several new development areas in the Northern Metropolis Area, unlocking the development potential of the area and connecting the existing Tuen Mun Line and East Rail Line, forming a circular railway connecting the New Territories and Kowloon, significantly expanding the coverage and resilience of the railway network. The Northern Link Branch Line will serve as a cross-border branch of the Northern Link Project, connecting the New Huanggang Port, linking the metro networks of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, facilitating the movement of personnel between the two cities, and serving Sin Tin Science Park and Riverfront area, while also providing functions for local commuting in Hong Kong and cross-border railway services, promoting the "hard connection" of infrastructure in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. After the Northern Link main line and branch line are put into service, the journey between Kam Sheung Road and Kudu, as well as between Sin Tin and New Huanggang Port, is expected to take approximately 12 minutes and 11 minutes respectively.
