According to reports, Canadian government officials are discussing how to allocate the low-tariff import quotas for electric vehicles manufactured in China, including whether to limit how much quota each company can use. Currently, officials are considering allocating specific shares to different Chinese manufacturers within the quota of 49,000 vehicles, to ensure that no single manufacturer dominates. The quota of 49,000 vehicles represents a relatively small proportion of the overall Canadian automotive market, accounting for less than 3% of new car and truck sales last year. According to a statement from the Canadian Department of Global Affairs, as of this week, these quotas have not been used.
