Today, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Medical Teaching Complex Building of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was held. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Carrie Lam, attended the event and delivered a speech, stating that the construction of the new medical school can attract and cultivate top talents in the fields of healthcare and higher education. Through deepening cooperation with the mainland, it can also contribute to accelerating the construction of a "Healthy China". At the same time, the new medical school can ensure improvements in the quality and efficiency of medical services in Hong Kong, as well as alleviate the shortage of healthcare professionals through increased local training, and help address the challenges brought about by an aging population. Carrie Lam pointed out that the SAR government fully supports the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in actively promoting the preparation work for the new medical school. Three subgroups have been established under the preparatory work committee for the new medical school, inviting representatives from government departments and experts in different fields to work together with the university to provide opinions and support in areas such as curriculum development and financial arrangements. The university will also work hand in hand with the Medical Council to complete the preparation work for course accreditation, among other aspects. Our common goal is to ensure that the new medical school and teaching hospital become a solid force in the overall medical education and service system in Hong Kong. It is understood that the SAR government has reserved land in the Northern Metropolis of Ngau Tam Mei as the permanent campus of the new medical school, as well as for the development of a comprehensive medical teaching and research hospital. The Medical Teaching Complex Building, which broke ground today, is one of the core facilities of the new medical school, and will serve as a transitional campus until the completion of the Northern Campus, welcoming the first batch of students in 2028.
