Reduce dependence on the US, Canada is expanding its natural gas pipeline to increase exports to Asia.
The Canadian government approved a natural gas pipeline expansion plan on the 24th aimed at increasing energy export capacity to Asia and reducing dependence on the single market of the United States. The government approved energy infrastructure company Enbridge's $4 billion investment in British Columbia to expand the natural gas pipeline system. The expansion project, named "Sunrise," is scheduled to begin in July this year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. Enbridge's existing natural gas pipeline system extends from northeastern British Columbia to the Canada-US border, with a total length of about 2900 kilometers. The expansion project will include the construction of 11 new segments totaling 139 kilometers on the existing pipeline system, as well as upgrades to increase natural gas compression capacity and adjust and upgrade existing facilities. Canadian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hutchison said in a statement that the expansion project will enhance Canada's ability to meet the natural gas demand in the Asian market, reflecting the country's strategy of trade diversification.
