Trump considers extending the exemption period to alleviate pressure on US oil transportation.
According to US officials, President Trump has suspended a controversial maritime law during the US-Iran conflict, easing restrictions on oil transportation between domestic ports; now, Trump plans to continue this lenient policy. The law in question is the Jones Act, enacted in 1920, which requires goods transported between US ports to be carried on ships flying the US flag. However, there is a relative shortage of US-flagged vessels globally, which has increased the cost of freight between US ports. In response to rising fuel prices due to the US-Iran conflict, Trump issued a 60-day waiver for the Jones Act on March 18 to simplify the oil transportation process and alleviate pressure on oil prices.
