Japan's imported car sales in 2025 recorded their first increase in seven years: Mercedes-Benz and BMW saw a decrease in sales, while BYD saw growth.
The Japan Automobile Importers Association released data showing that the sales of imported cars in 2025 increased by 3% year-on-year to 238,081 vehicles, marking the first increase in 7 years. The sales of imported pure electric vehicles increased by 34% to 33,299 vehicles, driving the overall growth. The sales of imported EVs in Japan have seen continuous growth for 7 years, accounting for 14% of the total imported car sales, up by 3 percentage points from the previous year. BYD saw a significant increase in sales, doubling to 4,536 vehicles. Tesla did not disclose its sales in Japan, but the company's sales in the "other" category accounted for half of the total with 13,717 vehicles. Mercedes-Benz saw a 6% decrease in sales in Japan, ranking first with 49,654 vehicles. BMW came in second with a 7% decrease in sales to 34,044 vehicles.
