The US State Department issued a statement on the 9th, stating that American diplomats were "ambushed" by Iraqi militia groups in the capital city of Baghdad on the 8th. The statement did not reveal any more information about the "ambush" or casualties. The statement said that US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau summoned the Iraqi Ambassador to the US, Nazar al-Khairallah, on the same day, "on behalf of the US government strongly condemned the serious terrorist attacks by pro-Iranian militia groups in Iraq against American diplomatic personnel and facilities." The statement also mentioned that in the preceding weeks, hundreds of attacks against American citizens, diplomatic facilities, commercial interests, etc. had occurred within Iraq. The statement also acknowledged the efforts of the Iraqi security forces to respond to these attacks, but at the same time believed that Iraq had failed to prevent the attacks. "Some members within the Iraqi government continue to provide political, financial, and operational cover for these militia groups, which has had a negative impact on US-Iraq relations." The Iraqi militia group Islamic Resistance Movement issued a statement on the 8th, announcing the suspension of their operations in Iraq and the Middle East region for a period of two weeks.
