The Federal Aviation Administration plans to fine American Airlines and Southwest Airlines for alleged violations of drug and alcohol regulations.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposed a civil penalty of $255,000 against a U.S. airline on Wednesday, accusing the company of violating employee drug and alcohol testing regulations. The FAA said that between May 2019 and December 2023, the airline allowed 12 flight attendants who tested positive for drugs and alcohol to resume safety-sensitive duties without completing all required follow-up tests. Last Friday, the FAA fined Southwest Airlines $304,000 for not conducting required follow-up drug or alcohol tests on 11 employees, including pilots, flight attendants, and aircraft mechanics. The FAA said that these employees had previously tested positive for alcohol or drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
