The presidency of the Republic of the Congo has issued a warning about the radiation risks in the Katanga mining area.
According to the presidential office of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country is investigating reports of radiation in the copper-cobalt mining area owned by Katanga Mining. A subsidiary of Katanga Mining, Kamoto Copper Company, stated that the concerns relate to a concession area that is not currently being mined and that their normal operations are not affected. According to meeting minutes read by Congo's Minister of Media, Patrick Muyaya, President Felix Tshisekedi informed the ministerial meeting last Friday that he had "received an urgent health alert involving radiation and the risk of radioactive pollution in the KCC mining area near the town of Kolwezi." The minutes indicated that the president stated, "If this situation is confirmed or continues, it could have serious consequences for public health and the environment." According to the briefing, Tshisekedi requested the establishment of a committee "to control the risks identified in the KCC mining area and prevent similar situations from arising with other mining or industrial operators nationwide."
