The 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization concluded with progress made on multiple issues.
On the early morning of March 30th local time, the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization closed in Yaound, Cameroon. During the 4-day conference, representatives of member states engaged in in-depth discussions on various issues such as WTO reform and the e-commerce agreement. They passed two decisions previously approved in Geneva: one to improve the integration of small economies into the multilateral trading system, and the other to strengthen the effective and precise implementation of the special and differential treatment provisions in the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade. WTO Director-General Amina Mohammed welcomed the progress made in negotiations on WTO reform, stating, "I believe we have established a new working model for the WTO to achieve modernization and be able to respond more flexibly and quickly to future challenges." However, the conference did not reach a consensus on the "Yaound Package Agreement," which includes the Yaound Ministerial Declaration on WTO reform and work plan, the Ministerial Decision on e-commerce, and the Least Developed Countries Package. These pending issues and agreement texts will be taken back to the WTO headquarters in Geneva and are planned to be finalized at the next General Council meeting.
