Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on March 12th local time that an additional allocation of 32 billion Canadian dollars will be used for defense and infrastructure construction in the northern regions. The funding will be used to build military hubs, roads, and improve northern airports, including four military bases located in Yellowknife, Inuvik, Iqaluit, and Goose Bay, Newfoundland. The infrastructure upgrades at these four northern military bases are crucial for Canada's deployment of new F-35 stealth fighter jets. Carney also stated that two operational support centers will be added in the Nunavut region for storing military equipment and ammunition, as well as deploying troops. These military bases will enable the Canadian military to rapidly deploy in all northern regions and support year-round continuous response operations.
