The decrease in initial jobless claims in the United States last week indicates that the scale of corporate layoffs remains limited. The U.S. Department of Labor said on Thursday that the number of initial jobless claims for the week ending March 7 was 213,000, lower than the previous week's 214,000 and lower than the market expected 215,000. The number of continuing jobless claims for the week ending February 28 dropped to 1.85 million, down from the previous week's 1.87 million. The initial jobless claims data released on Thursday came after the U.S. Department of Labor released a weaker-than-expected employment report last week, which showed a decrease of 92,000 jobs last month after an increase of 126,000 in January. However, the relatively moderate initial jobless claims data suggests that businesses are more inclined to retain employees rather than implement large-scale layoffs.
