Workers at the Glencore copper smelter in Australia have threatened to strike starting from Friday due to the breakdown of salary negotiations. The Australian Workers Union claims that Glencore's wages are nearly 15% lower than those of their counterparts in the area, and they are demanding an increase in pay. The smelter, located in Townsville, Queensland, produces 300,000 tons of finished copper annually and is one of the largest copper refineries in Australia, processing third-party materials including those from BHP Billiton. The union has notified Glencore on Wednesday of their decision to strike and will hold a final round of negotiations on Thursday. The union secretary, Stacey Nunn, stated that despite Glencore having a history of layoffs, workers are still fighting for the future of the plant.
