Spanish researchers use fish scales to develop artificial corneas.
The University of Granada in Spain issued a press release on the 10th stating that its researchers collaborated with peers to develop low-cost artificial corneas using common fish scales as raw materials, providing a new potential solution for the treatment of severe corneal diseases. After a comprehensive analysis of fish scales, the research team found that they have potential uses in corneal repair and regeneration. They processed fish scales from common fish such as carp to manufacture corneal implants that are highly biocompatible, tough, and transparent. In laboratory tests and animal experiments, the functional effects of these implants have shown promising results. The related research paper has been published in the international academic journal "Materials & Design."
