United States Senator Kelly proposes to temporarily suspend the federal gasoline tax until October 1st.
According to Reuters, Democratic Senator Mark Kelly proposed on Friday to temporarily suspend the federal gasoline tax of 18.4 cents per gallon until October 1 to help Americans facing rising oil prices due to the US-Iran conflict. According to data from the AAA, a travel organization tracking fuel prices in the United States, national gas prices have risen by 35 cents in the past week, reaching an average of $3.32 per gallon. Political analysts say that the continued increase in gasoline prices could be detrimental to President Trump's Republican colleagues in the November midterm elections as they seek to maintain control of Congress. Kelly plans to introduce this legislation in the Senate next week. Once the bill is passed, the US Treasury Department will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the tax suspension to ensure that the savings from taxes are actually used to lower gasoline prices for the benefit of consumers.
