According to officials from the U.S. Department of Commerce, as part of a $550 billion strategic trade and investment agreement, Japan is planning to invest about $36 billion in the United States, with investments covering key minerals, oil and gas infrastructure, and power generation. President Trump posted on social media on Tuesday, "Our massive trade deal with Japan has just begun!" Trump said in his post that these projects are the "first batch of investments" under the U.S.-Japan agreement announced last year, "part of our historic trade deal aimed at revitalizing the U.S. industrial base, creating hundreds of thousands of high-quality American jobs, and strengthening our national and economic security in unprecedented ways." The largest project is a $33 billion natural gas power facility in Portsmouth, Ohio, expected to generate 9.2 gigawatts of power, making it one of the largest electricity projects ever announced in the United States. Officials say the facility will be led by a subsidiary of SoftBank, SB Energy. Japan will also invest just over $2 billion in a deep-water crude oil export facility along the Texas Gulf Coast led by Sentinel Midstream. The third project involves a silicon carbide manufacturing plant in Georgia. The Japanese Prime Minister is expected to visit the White House in March.
