The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) stated on Tuesday that electricity usage in the United States will continue to increase in 2026 and 2027. It is projected that electricity demand will rise from a record 41,950 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 to 42,680 billion kilowatt-hours in 2026, and further increase to 43,720 billion kilowatt-hours in 2027. Part of the reason for this growth in demand is the rapid expansion of data centers, as well as increased use of electricity in heating and transportation by households and businesses, leading to a reduction in fossil fuel consumption. It is estimated that in 2026, residential electricity sales will increase to 15,410 billion kilowatt-hours, commercial electricity sales to 15,200 billion kilowatt-hours, and industrial electricity sales to 10,630 billion kilowatt-hours. As renewable energy generation increases, the share of natural gas in the power mix will remain at 40% in 2025 and 2026, then decrease to 39% in 2027. The share of coal-fired power will decrease from 17% in 2025 to 16% in 2026 and further to 15% in 2027. The share of renewable energy generation will increase from approximately 24% in 2025 to 25% in 2026 and reach 27% in 2027, while the share of nuclear power will remain at 18% from 2025 to 2027.
