Han Encryption Exchange mistakenly sent users more than $40 billion worth of Bitcoin and will compensate some users for their losses.
South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp said on Saturday that it had successfully recovered almost all of the approximately 620,000 bitcoins mistakenly sent to users, with only 125 coins remaining unrecovered. The incident, which occurred around 7pm local time on Friday evening, briefly caused a sharp sell-off on the platform. The exchange stated that it would compensate customers who sold their bitcoin holdings in panic, with some customers receiving full compensation for their losses and an additional 10% bonus. As of Saturday, Bitstamp estimated customer losses at around 1 billion Korean won and said it would use company assets to make up any shortfall to ensure customer account balances are restored.
