Small-cap stocks in the US are currently enjoying their moment in the spotlight, and Wall Street does not believe that this momentum will end anytime soon. The Russell 2000 index just concluded its longest period of outperforming large-cap stocks since 1996. These stocks are considered higher risk due to their correlation with economic and credit cycles. Despite this remarkable performance, historical patterns suggest that periods of relative strength like this are often difficult to sustain in the long term. However, strategists are not worried about this. They are increasingly optimistic about the prospects of small-cap stocks, seeing them as a way to participate in a bull market led by large tech stocks and gradually spreading to a broader market. "Strong, but not overheated growth, combined with low or falling interest rates, are the two major macro forces driving the rise of small-cap stocks," said Sebastien Page, Chief Investment Officer at PIMCO. "We believe this situation can continue for another six months."
