The Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning on the 27th, saying that the country's southeast is experiencing the most severe heatwave since 2009. The bureau confirmed that the town of Renmark in South Australia reached a temperature of 49.6 degrees Celsius that day, and in the northwest of Victoria, the towns of Walpeup and Hopetoun both reached temperatures of 48.9 degrees Celsius, setting new local temperature records since records began in 1901. In Melbourne, the temperature near the airport reached 44.1 degrees Celsius at 3:30 pm that day.
