Indonesia's chief negotiator Airlangga said on Friday that Indonesia expects to complete tariff negotiations with the United States by the end of this year, adding that a delegation will soon fly to Washington D.C. to continue the talks. The statement came after Airlangga and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson-Greer discussed tariff issues over the phone on Thursday. Airlangga stated at an economic forum, "We agreed to fulfill the agreement reached in the July 22 Leaders' Declaration." An unnamed U.S. official mentioned that due to Jakarta backtracking on several previous commitments, there is a risk of the trade agreement between the two countries falling apart. However, Jakarta stated that talks with Washington are ongoing and that the "dynamics" are normal, adding that a unified wording is needed to finalize the agreement. After Jakarta agreed to eliminate tariffs on over 99% of U.S. goods and remove all non-tariff barriers faced by U.S. companies, the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Indonesian products decreased from 32% to 19%.
