The International Atomic Energy Agency released a statement on the 5th stating that the protective cover for the reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was severely damaged in February this year after being attacked by an unmanned aerial vehicle. Following a comprehensive assessment of the protective cover by a working group last week, the agency determined that the cover had lost its sealing performance, but its load-bearing structure and monitoring system were not permanently damaged. The Director General of the agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, stated that repairs on the protective cover have begun and a full restoration is needed to prevent further degradation of the facility and ensure long-term safety.
