Foreign media reports say Broadcom Inc. (AVGO.US) is arranging more than $50 billion in financing for custom AI chips it is co-developing with OpenAI, making it the latest example of a wave of AI infrastructure financing deals.
The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said lenders including Apollo Global Management and Blackstone are in talks to participate in the deal. Meanwhile, Oracle Corp. is in discussions with Apollo and Goldman Sachs Group to raise funds for chip procurement.
Faced with soaring data center construction costs, these companies are increasingly seeking such financing deals. The AI infrastructure boom, aimed at supporting the large-scale adoption of software and services, is pushing tech giants toward new forms of financing.
Broadcom said in June that it had set up a financing platform, with Apollo and Blackstone as anchor investors, aiming to help finance more than 20 gigawatts of computing power for AI developers by 2028, with beneficiaries including Anthropic and OpenAI. The platform's first phase is sized at $35 billion, led by Apollo alongside Blackstone.
An August report said Broadcom had held talks with a group of lenders to raise more than $60 billion in debt for an AI chip financing deal, with Anthropic and other companies set to benefit.
From a broader perspective, the scale of AI infrastructure financing has entered the trillion-dollar era. A Bank of America Securities report released in September showed that since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, cumulative debt issuance by AI-related companies, securitized products and project financing has reached $1.374 trillion, of which $635.1 billion was issued since 2026.
