The Hang Seng Index Company reported that the Hong Kong stock market, represented by the Hang Seng Composite Index, fell by 0.8% in August. The Hang Seng Index and Hang Seng H-Share Index ETF decreased by 1.2% and 1.1%, respectively, while the Hang Seng Volatility Index and Hang Seng China Enterprises Index Volatility Index dropped by 15% and 16%, to 18 and 20. The Hang Seng Tech Index, which tracks leading technology companies listed in Hong Kong, decreased by 4.3% in August. The Hang Seng Biotech Index, which tracks large biotech companies listed in Hong Kong, rose by 11.7% in August. The Hang Seng Stock Connect China 500 Index, which reflects the performance of the 500 largest listed companies in Hong Kong and Mainland China, recorded an increase of 0.1% in August. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng A-Share Stock Connect 300 Index, which reflects the performance of the 300 largest listed companies in Mainland China, saw an increase of 0.6%. Among the industry indices in the Hang Seng Composite Index, the materials sector performed best in August (+11.0%), while the consumer staples sector performed the worst (-6.1%). Within the Hang Seng Index series, the Hang Seng Hong Kong Stock Connect Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Index had the best performance (+17.3%), followed by the Hang Seng A-Share Copper Industry Index (+15.7%) and the Hang Seng A-Share Electronic Components Index (+14.1%). In the thematic index series, the Hang Seng Hong Kong Stock Connect Innovative Drugs and Healthcare Index performed well in the Hong Kong market (+9.4%), while the Hang Seng Shanghai-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Technology Select 50 Index had better performance in the Mainland/Cross-Market (+9.6%). In the ESG index series, the Hang Seng Sustainable Development Enterprises Index performed well in the Hong Kong market (+0.5%), while the Hang Seng A-Share Sustainable Development Enterprises Benchmark Index showed better performance in the Mainland/Cross-Market (+1.5%). In the factor index series, the Hang Seng Large and Mid-Cap Stock Size Select Index, which tracks the "size" factor, fell by 0.1% in August, outperforming all other factor indices in the Hong Kong market. The Hang Seng A-Share Size Select Index (+4.1%) performed better in the Mainland market. The Hang Seng Shanghai-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect Greater Bay Area Composite Index rose by 1.5%. As of August 31, the total assets under management of products passively tracking the Hang Seng Index series were approximately $108.93 billion (-3.3%). The assets under management for exchange-traded products linked to the Hang Seng Index, Hang Seng H-Share Index ETF, and Hang Seng Tech Index were approximately $21.6 billion (-3.1%), $8 billion (+0.2%), and $38.2 billion (-5.1%), respectively.
