According to the figures released by the Hong Kong government's statistics department, calculated by the nominal wage index, the average wage rate in Hong Kong in December 2025 increased by 3.4% compared to the same period last year.
On March 27th, according to the figures released by the Hong Kong government's census and statistics department, for all selected industry categories included in the survey, the nominal wage index calculated an average wage increase of 3.4% in December 2025 compared to the same period the previous year.
In December 2025, approximately 62% of companies saw an increase in average wages compared to the previous year, 33% saw a decrease, and the remaining 5% saw no change.
After deducting factors of consumer price changes calculated using the Class A Consumer Price Index, the real average wage rate in December 2025 increased by 1.9% compared to the same period the previous year for all selected industry categories included in the survey.
In terms of total wage statistics, for all industry categories included in the survey, the nominal average wage index for the fourth quarter of 2025 increased by 3.2% compared to the same period the previous year.
After deducting factors of consumer price changes calculated using the Comprehensive Consumer Price Index, the real average wage for employees in the fourth quarter of 2025 increased by 1.9% compared to the same period the previous year.
The wage rate includes basic wages, as well as regular allowances and bonuses. Total wages also include non-regular compensation expenses given to employees such as irregular bonuses and overtime allowances. Therefore, the seasonal fluctuations in total wage statistics are influenced by actual working hours, as well as the timing of bonus and allowance payments, resulting in significant fluctuations.
In terms of changes in different industries:
- Nominal wage index: In December 2025, all selected industry categories recorded year-on-year increases ranging from 2.9% to 3.9%.
- Real wage index: In December 2025, all selected industry categories also recorded year-on-year increases ranging from 1.4% to 2.3%.
- Nominal average wage index: In the fourth quarter of 2025, all selected industry categories recorded year-on-year increases ranging from 2.2% to 4.8%.
- Real average wage index: In the fourth quarter of 2025, all selected industry categories also recorded year-on-year increases ranging from 0.9% to 3.5%.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government stated that in the fourth quarter of 2025, both nominal and real wages and labor income continued to increase year-on-year. Average wage rates and average wages for employees in all selected industries saw varying degrees of increase.
Looking ahead, the ongoing growth in the Hong Kong economy should continue to support labor demand, leading to an increase in wages and labor income. However, the economy faces various external uncertainties, and the government will remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation.
