In April, Macao's comprehensive consumer price index increased by 0.23% year-on-year and rebounded by 0.16% month-on-month.
On May 23rd, the Statistics and Census Service of Macao reported that the comprehensive consumer price index in April 2025 increased by 0.23% compared to the same period last year, and rose by 0.16% compared to the previous month. In the twelve months leading up to April of this year, the average composite consumer price index increased by 0.42% compared to the same period a year ago (from May 2023 to April 2024).
On May 23, data from the Macao Statistics and Census Bureau showed that the comprehensive consumer price index rose by 0.23% year-on-year in April 2025, with a monthly increase of 0.16% compared to the previous month. In the twelve months up to April of this year, the average index of the comprehensive consumer price rose by 0.42% compared to the same period a year earlier (May 2023 to April 2024).
Compared to the same month last year, the price indices of the categories of leisure, sports and culture, and miscellaneous goods and services (including personal care, insurance, jewelry, and watches) rose by 2.47% and 1.82%, respectively; dining out and takeout charges increased, driving a 0.48% year-on-year increase in the food and non-alcoholic beverage category, while rising housing rents led to a 0.21% increase in the housing and fuel category. On the other hand, the categories of information and communication (-3.01%), clothing and footwear (-2.35%), and transportation (-1.67%) decreased. Class A and Class B consumer price indices rose by 0.18% and 0.27% respectively year-on-year.
Compared to March, the comprehensive consumer price index rose by 0.16% in April. Rising hotel room rates led to a significant increase in the price index of leisure, sports, and culture (+2.6%) category compared to the previous month; the arrival of summer clothing and rising airfare prices drove increases in the clothing and transportation categories by 0.78% and 0.42% respectively. On the other hand, the price index of the information and communication category decreased compared to the previous month, and the consumer-focused food and non-alcoholic beverage category (-0.04%) also recorded a decline, mainly due to the insufficient increase in dining out and takeout charges to fully offset the drop in prices of fresh fish, seafood, vegetables, and fruits. Class A and Class B consumer price indices rose by 0.12% and 0.19% respectively.
In the twelve months up to April of this year, the average index of the comprehensive consumer price rose by 0.42% compared to the same period a year earlier. Categories with significant increases in price indices included miscellaneous goods and services (+2.47%), education (+2.21%), and medical care (+1.62%), while the price index of transportation (-3%) decreased. Class A and Class B consumer price indices rose by 0.4% and 0.44% respectively.
The average index of the comprehensive consumer price rose by 0.17% year-on-year in the first four months of this year, with the food and non-alcoholic beverage category rising by 0.63%; Class A and Class B consumer price indices rose by 0.13% and 0.19% respectively.
The Macao Statistics and Census Bureau has compiled three series of consumer price indices to reflect the impact of changes in prices of goods/services on different expenditure groups of households. Class A and Class B consumer price indices cover approximately 50% and 30% of households, with average monthly expenditures ranging from 11,000 to 35,999 Macao Patacas and 36,000 to 71,999 Macao Patacas respectively. The comprehensive consumer price index covers all of these households; among them, the categories of housing and fuel, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and transportation account for a higher proportion of household expenditures, with weights of 34.47, 29.47, and 8.33 respectively.
