HarmonyOS-Powered Computer Officially Released: A Major Breakthrough in Domestic Operating Systems
Chengdu, May 19 — On May 19, Huawei officially released two HarmonyOS-based computers in Chengdu, including its first foldable PC. This marks a significant step forward for China in the field of computer operating systems.
An operating system serves as the foundational platform for software operations. Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman of Terminal BG, Richard Yu, noted that for many years, Microsoft Windows and Apple’s macOS have dominated the global computer operating system market. In contrast, China’s domestic software ecosystem started relatively late and has had a weaker foundation. Now, with the arrival of HarmonyOS computers, Huawei has achieved full-chain independent control—from the system kernel to the application ecosystem.
These HarmonyOS computers are built on the system’s capability of "develop once, deploy across multiple devices," and for the first time, have realized deep integration between mobile and PC ecosystems. This expands the functional boundaries of computers and enriches user scenarios. Currently, over 150 dedicated PC ecosystem applications are being rapidly adapted, and more than 300 integrated ecosystem applications have completed adaptation. By the end of the year, it is expected that over 2,000 integrated ecosystem applications will be supported. HarmonyOS computers already cover core user needs including general office work, creative design, practical tools, financial management, multimedia entertainment, education, and gaming. Including the newly launched HarmonyOS computers, the total number of connected devices within the HarmonyOS ecosystem has now exceeded 1 billion units.
According to available information, HarmonyOS computers have been in the works for five years. They bring together research and development efforts from more than 20 Huawei research institutes worldwide and have laid out over 2,700 patents, reconstructing the operating system starting from the kernel. The key technical features of these computers include system-level AI capabilities, distributed collaborative experiences, and all-scenario security protection. Through ecosystem integration and industrial collaboration, HarmonyOS computers inject new momentum into the thriving development of domestic computer operating system ecosystems.
