Qualcomm will supply hardware components for SpaceX's planned nationwide terrestrial wireless communications network in the United States. This is the latest sign that Musk's rocket and satellite company is preparing to challenge the major operators in the U.S. mobile communications industry. Qualcomm said SpaceX will use its Dragonwing series components for base station deployment to support calls and data transmission, and will also use some of Qualcomm's proprietary software as the network's core control system. The two sides have signed a multi-year agreement under which Qualcomm will build "tens of thousands of base stations" for its 5G network, with deployment set to begin next year. Qualcomm Executive Vice President Durga Malladi said the number of base stations planned would be comparable to the scale currently deployed by major U.S. wireless carriers. Speaking about SpaceX's commitment to implementing the plan, Malladi said: "From our perspective, they are very committed and serious. We have extremely high confidence in this."
