The 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity urges accelerated implementation of the "Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework."
The 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity concluded on October 31 in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. The conference adopted decisions on issues including the first global collective progress review of the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and resource mobilization, as well as the meeting report, urging all parties to accelerate the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Framework. COP17 was originally scheduled to end on the 30th. After overnight "extra-time" consultations, the conference adopted the global review decision on the morning of the 31st local time, which includes the "Yerevan Pathway" proposed by the host country Armenia aimed at accelerating the implementation of the framework, urging all parties to strengthen international cooperation and support for developing countries to bridge the current gaps in framework implementation. Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Convention Secretariat, said before the conclusion of the meeting that this session completed the global review and identified the existing gaps, and that it is now necessary to continue along the "Yerevan Pathway" to achieve the 2030 global restoration goals. The conference also reviewed issues in areas including financial mechanisms, biodiversity and climate change, marine and coastal biodiversity, forest biodiversity, as well as traditional knowledge, synthetic biology, and biodiversity mainstreaming. The conference decided that the 18th Conference of the Parties to the Convention will be held in Ecuador in 2028.
