UN Environment Programme: Global emissions reduction has yielded results, but efforts remain insufficient

The "2026 Emissions Gap Report" released by the United Nations Environment Programme on the 21st shows that the development of renewable energy and the implementation of climate policies have enabled countries to achieve tangible results in emissions reduction, but current policies and emissions reduction commitments are still insufficient to meet the temperature control targets set by the Paris Agreement, and all parties need to further accelerate action. The Paris Agreement proposes that by the end of this century, the increase in the global average temperature should be held to within 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and efforts should be made to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The report says that from 2016 to 2025, annual greenhouse gas emissions declined in 63 countries or regions worldwide, while emissions from the power sector declined in 90 countries or regions during the same period. The study found that between 2000 and 2020, 69 significant emissions reductions occurred in various countries or relevant sectors, of which 63 occurred within 2 years of the introduction of new or strengthened climate-related policies.
