Severe riots break out in France; violent protests spread across Europe; euro falls.
French President Emmanuel Macron said France was angry and ashamed by the widespread violence that occurred over the weekend and called for order to be restored. Protests in multiple cities turned into clashes between police and demonstrators, triggering the worst street violence France has seen in years, including looting and arson attacks on landmark buildings. In a speech on Sunday evening, Macron said, "The state needs order and peace, not escalation." He added that regional officials would decide together with mayors how to protect public buildings and businesses, including banning marches if necessary. France's is the largest in a series of demonstrations across Europe, with Belgium, Italy and Portugal also affected. The euro weakened, falling as much as 0.5% to $1.1183 in early Asian trading on Monday. The situation in Ukraine is also weighing on the euro, with Zelensky accusing Trump of forcing Kyiv to surrender to Moscow and saying Ukraine could stop striking Russian oil refineries on condition that the United States delivers more "Patriot" interceptors.
