According to foreign media reports, the U.S. September CPI report showed that core price increases exceeded expectations, leaving the possibility of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October still on the table. After the CPI inflation data was released, S&P 500 index futures turned lower, while U.S. Treasury yields rose sharply. Following the CPI inflation report, S&P 500 index futures fell 0.3%, reversing an earlier gain of 0.2%. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 10 basis points to 5.318%. Before the CPI data was released, it was 5.19%, and on Tuesday it was 5.22%. The two-year U.S. Treasury yield, which is more closely tied to Federal Reserve policy, surged 13 basis points to 4.92%. Currently, the market expects an increased probability that the Federal Reserve will raise rates by 25 basis points in October. However, if the decision on whether to raise rates at that time is too close to call, the Federal Reserve may lean toward holding off on a rate hike before the U.S. election day.

GlobalFoundries plans to build two new chip factories with up to $21 billion in funding support from the Japanese government. As part of the related agreement, the U.S. government will also acquire about a 4% stake in the company. Under the agreement announced on Wednesday, GlobalFoundries will operate two factories jointly owned by the United States and Japan at its existing campus in upstate New York. Construction funding will come from the $550 billion Japan had previously pledged to invest in the United States. The new factories will produce so-called "basic chips," semiconductors that are relatively less technologically complex but critical and widely used in areas such as automobiles, industrial equipment, and communications equipment. As electronic components are increasingly used in a wide range of products, demand for these chips continues to grow, and chipmakers are stepping up efforts to expand supply. The artificial intelligence boom has also intensified supply tightness, as the semiconductor industry devotes more resources to advanced chips such as Nvidia's AI accelerators. GlobalFoundries' agreement aims to increase U.S. production of basic chips and reduce reliance on East Asian suppliers in response to U.S. national security concerns.
