Rio Tinto's copper output held steady in the third quarter, with strong performance at the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia offsetting declines elsewhere, while iron ore shipments also edged higher. Copper accounted for more than a third of Rio Tinto's first-half earnings this year, and output in the three months to the end of September was 205,000 tonnes. Iron ore remains Rio Tinto's biggest revenue source, and as the company ramps up production at the Simandou joint venture in Guinea, third-quarter iron ore shipments rose 3 per cent year on year to 90.8mn tonnes.
