Affected by the Wall Street sell-off, Japanese stocks fell for a second consecutive trading day. Persistently high oil prices have reignited inflation concerns and weighed on a stock market that had already approached record highs. Cyclical stocks, including trading companies, banks, and materials shares, led the declines. Takashi Ito, a senior strategist at Nomura Securities, said AI and semiconductor-related stocks, as well as cyclical shares such as steelmakers and nonferrous metal producers, may continue to face selling pressure. However, solid domestic corporate earnings prospects should help limit the decline, making a drop as sharp as Wednesday's unlikely.
