Spain to hold snap election, polls show People's Party in the lead
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Snchez has announced early elections on November 29. Last week, the housing plan his government had hoped would quell escalating social protests was rejected by parliament. The government introduced emergency housing measures, but the plan ultimately failed to secure enough votes in parliament. Snchez's minority government had already suffered a series of heavy blows, including floods and a migration crisis, and has recently faced nationwide protests over housing costs. Recent polls show the center-right People's Party in the lead. In a poll of 1,200 people conducted from September 24 to 26, the People's Party had 33.9% support. People's Party leader Alberto Nez Feijo said the party could form a coalition government with the far-right Vox party, which had 18% support in this survey; Snchez's Socialist Workers' Party had 25.7% support.
