Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who has warned that artificial intelligence could become too powerful for humans to control, will appear at a New York City Council hearing on Monday, testifying alongside representatives from some of the world's largest AI companies. Coxon will attend the hearing at the request of New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, according to people familiar with the matter. New York City council members are currently considering a series of bills aimed at establishing safety guardrails around the technology. Coxon left Anthropic last month and issued a stark warning about the race to develop increasingly powerful AI, accusing his former employers Anthropic and OpenAI of "betting with our lives." He has confirmed plans to testify at Monday's hearing. The hearing will bring some of the industry's most outspoken critics together with representatives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Alphabet's Google, and Meta Platforms. Former Google DeepMind researcher Alex Turner and Daniel Kokotajlo, executive director of the AI Futures Project and a former OpenAI researcher, are also expected to testify, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. The four major AI companies will send officials responsible for policy and safety affairs to attend the hearing, the person said.
