SpaceX (SPCX.O) launched its heavy Starship rocket from Starbase in southern Texas at 7:48 a.m. local time (20:48 Beijing time), beginning a mission that could last nearly 10 hours. However, SpaceX subsequently confirmed an engine failure and said the Starship would be unable to enter orbit. After the engine failure was announced, SpaceX-related shares fell to a low in premarket trading, down about 2%. The engine failure will prevent the planned deployment of 26 upgraded Starlink satellites. Nevertheless, despite the engine failure, SpaceX said it might still attempt to get the Starship into orbit. The Starship then successfully entered orbit for the first time and began deploying Starlink satellites. The news drove sharp swings in the stock price during premarket trading, which then returned to roughly flat levels.
