The U.S. Court of Appeals has rejected the appeal from Meta and other tech companies, allowing the social media addiction lawsuit to continue.

A U.S. appeals court ruled on Monday that thousands of lawsuits against Meta Platforms, Google's parent company Alphabet, and Snapchat's parent company Snap can proceed. These lawsuits allege that the product designs of these companies make it easy for young users to become addicted. The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected appeals from Meta and other companies, stating that it was too early to make a decision. The companies sought to overturn a lower court ruling that required them to respond to over 3,000 lawsuits filed in federal court. These companies argued that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 protects them from lawsuits claiming they failed to warn the public about the addictive nature of their platforms. This provision generally shields internet companies from liability related to content posted by users.
