The Rhine River flows through Germany's industrial core and carries about 80% of the country's inland shipping volume. Recently, the water level of the Rhine has been continuously dropping due to high temperatures and drought. Data from the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration of Germany indicates that on the 6th, the navigation depth of the critical section of the Rhinespecifically the Kaub stretchhas reached a historic low, breaking the previous record set in 2018. On the same day, German Transport Minister Stefan Bilger convened executives from businesses, shipping companies, and port authorities to discuss countermeasures. He stated that short-term plans would be developed to ensure transport, while long-term strategies would include dredging waterways and improving shipping conditions. Institutions like German Commercial Bank have also warned that if water levels continue to drop, inland shipping costs in Germany may continue to rise, leading to increased risks of supply chain disruptions and industrial production cuts.
