Porto-Novo news: Former President of Benin Patrice Talon was elected the first president of the newly established Senate of the country on the 6th. The election for the Senate president took place in the capital city of Benin, Porto-Novo. Out of 25 senators who voted, Talon was elected president with 24 votes in favor, 0 against, and 1 abstention, serving a term of five years. Former National Assembly President Louis Vlavonou was elected as the vice president. This election marks the completion of the establishment of the Senate in Benin. After his election, Talon stated that he would be committed to "strengthening national unity, maintaining political stability, peace, and democracy in the country." Talon, who is 68 years old, assumed the presidency of Benin in April 2016, was re-elected in April 2021, and will step down in May 2026. According to the constitutional amendment promulgated on December 17, 2025, the parliament of Benin has transitioned from a unicameral National Assembly to a bicameral system consisting of the National Assembly and the Senate. The first Senate was officially established on July 30. According to the Constitution of Benin, the Senate is responsible for maintaining national unity, promoting national development, political stability, democracy, and peace, as well as maintaining political truce, and may decide to suspend or deprive political rights and civil rights of relevant political entities under the conditions stipulated by the Constitution.
