Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the tariffs imposed by Trump on imported aluminum are mostly borne by American buyers. He added that there is a possibility of reaching a "win-win" trade agreement, but this depends on both countries being able to address the issues in the aluminum industry within the broader context of the trade war. Carney told reporters outside a Rio Tinto aluminum smelter in Quebec that since Trump imposed a 50% tariff on imported aluminum in June last year, aluminum prices in the U.S. have increased significantly. The producer price index for aluminum rose by 52% from June 2025 to June 2026.
