Barclays analysts stated in a research report that the deployment of humanoid robots may achieve mass adoption after 2035. They pointed out that much of the current hype surrounding humanoid robots reflects pre-set demonstrations, manually controlled remote operations, or automation of specific tasks, rather than true general autonomy. To achieve real general autonomy, humanoid robots need "perception, reasoning, and adaptive behavior." The deployment of humanoid robots may ultimately be similar to that of self-driving cars, which took over a decade to develop. Therefore, they indicated that large-scale economic applications are likely closer to 2035 than 2030, while recent deployments will focus on narrow, controlled industrial application scenarios.
