Report: The transmission towers of Southern California Edison have triggered the Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County, causing severe damage.

On Tuesday, fire investigators concluded that an electrical spark from a decommissioned transmission tower belonging to Southern California Edison ignited the devastating wildfire in 2025 that resulted in 19 deaths and destroyed thousands of homes near Los Angeles. This finding was published in a 55-page report by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and could have significant legal consequences for the utility giant, which is a subsidiary of Edison International. The company faces potential liability claims amounting to billions of dollars due to the fire, referred to as the "Eaton Fire." While the report indicated that the blaze, which erupted on January 7, 2025, was influenced by other factorsincluding strong gusts of wind at the timeit unequivocally identified the arcing phenomenon captured in video footage from the Edison transmission tower as the sole cause and ignition point of the fire. The report stated that two "consecutive arc discharge events" caused "unknown combustible material" from the decommissioned tower to fall onto the dry vegetation below, igniting the fire approximately 12 seconds later. Edison did not immediately contest or acknowledge the findings of the report.
