U.S. President Trump stated that the joint effort by the U.S. and Japan to defend the yen for the first time in decades is a signal of friendship. The Trump administration is providing support for Americas trusted partners, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said. Most observers are skeptical, believing that the situation is not that simple. We understand Mr. Trumps style theres no such thing as a free lunch, said Jonathan Fortun, a senior economist at the Institute of International Finance in Washington. Fortun and other analysts pointed out that the U.S. is involved in a range of interests in the process of helping Japan pull the yens exchange rate against the dollar back from a nearly 40-year low. Similar to last year's approach with Argentina, part of the reason may be Trumps assistance to a fellow conservative leader Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, whose approval ratings have recently declined.
