Rio Tinto: No intention to hurriedly restart negotiations with Glencore.
The pause period for Rio Tinto's acquisition discussions with Glencore will expire on Tuesday, but informed sources indicate that, given CEO Simon Thompson is currently focused on cost-cutting and asset sales, no new cooperation talks are expected in the short term. Since Thompson took over as CEO of the world's second-largest publicly listed mining company a year ago, he has implemented a streamlined strategy aimed at splitting Rio Tinto into three core businesses and concentrating on its most profitable assets. However, just months later, he began assessing the feasibility of a massive $200 billion merger intended to combine Glencore's marketing and copper assets with Rio Tinto's operational expertise to maximize the potential of its copper business. Ultimately, Thompson failed to find a reasonable basis for valuation, and the mining company exited negotiations on February 5. According to UK takeover regulations, this move triggered a six-month ceasefire period, which will conclude this Tuesday. According to three informed sources, Thompson has assured Australian investors that Rio Tinto has no reason to reopen negotiations with Glencore.
