On Monday, the Japanese Ministry of Finance announced that it conducted a coordinated intervention with the United States to purchase yen, stating it will not hesitate to conduct further interventions in the currency market alongside the U.S. Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki remarked that Japan will continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain close communication with the relevant departments of the U.S. Treasury. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen noted that Friday's coordinated action in the currency market helped curb disorderly fluctuations of the yen. U.S. President Trump stated on Sunday that the U.S. is assisting Japan in supporting the yen's exchange rate, reflecting the friendship between the two nations and benefiting the global economy. "The yen is depreciating, and they want some help. And we are always here to support Japan," Trump said when asked by reporters why the U.S. was helping to support the yen. "Japan has always been good to us, except for the Pearl Harbor incident... This is also good for the world economy." Following Trump's comments, the dollar fell by 0.2% against the yen, to 157.07 yen.
