Global agriculture has long been plagued by plant diseases, with various viruses, bacteria, fungi, and oomycetes attacking crops year after year, causing significant economic losses. Breeding resistant varieties is the most economical and sustainable way to prevent and control plant diseases. For centuries, humans have been breeding disease-resistant crops by following the old path of "exploring natural disease-resistant genes". Through research, Chinese scientific research teams have for the first time proposed a new scientific concept of programmable plant synthetic immunity, establishing a platform for designing artificial synthetic plant immune receptors that can be customized as needed. This breakthrough promotes a transformation in crop breeding from "utilizing nature" to "targeted creation", building a solid scientific barrier for food security to cope with new and evolving crop diseases. The related findings were published online by the international scientific journal "Science" on July 24th.
