"Financial engine" at full throttle. The added value of the financial industry in Shanghai increased by a strong 10.2% in the first half of the year.
Recently, the Shanghai Bureau of Statistics released the economic data for the first half of 2026, showing that the gross domestic product of Shanghai reached 2.7886 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%, outperforming the national average growth rate. In particular, the value added in the financial industry was 496.418 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10.2%, continuing the positive momentum from the previous quarter. The growth in the financial industry is driven by the overall active trading in the financial markets. In the first half of the year, the major financial markets in Shanghai achieved a total trading volume of 226.916 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 24.1%. Specifically, all major financial infrastructures flourished: the turnover of the Shanghai Futures Exchange increased by 53.9% year-on-year, the turnover of the Shanghai Gold Exchange increased by 38.2% year-on-year, the turnover of the Shanghai Stock Exchange increased by 35.2% year-on-year, and the turnover of the interbank market increased by 16.6% year-on-year.
