The Federal Election Commission revealed in a filing on Wednesday night local time that Dario Amodei, CEO of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, donated $1 million to the political action committee Public First in May of this year. The super PAC specifically supports politicians who endorse the demands of the tech industry and advocate for the implementation of safety regulations for the AI sector. This is Amodei's first single donation of such a large amount, as he previously only made small donations to Democratic politicians. Weeks after Amodei made this donation, Public First transferred over $3 million to its affiliated super PAC "Jobs and Democracy". The committee has invested a total of $12 million to support New York State Democratic Assemblyman Alex Bols in his bid for the congressional seat vacated by Nader. Bols lost in the primary in June by a narrow margin, turning the election into a proxy battle between two opposing factions in the AI industry. As Bols led the drafting of AI safety legislation in New York State, the "Leading the Future" committee, supported by OpenAI President Greg Brockman and venture capital firm Anderson Horowitz, spent $8 million in advertising opposing Bols's candidacy.
